Artistically, I've delved into the pressures and challenges facing women in contemporary Chinese society in the 21st century. These pressures often stem from the imbalance between familial and societal roles, as well as the gender discrimination imposed by traditional Chinese thought and culture. The conflict with entrenched social norms arises from the awakening of women's rights consciousness.
In my creative endeavors, I mainly chose materials such as wool, thread, and women's garments. This choice is rooted in my Mongolian background, evoking a deep connection to traditional female crafts, such as woolen textiles. For instance, in the work You Must Be Mature, I used a special tool called tufting gun, typically used in carpet making, to complete this piece. It embodies the excessive expectations and demands I received from my parents during my transitional period. Through both the materials and the crafting process, it showcases my unique cultural background and reflections upon the traditional labor associated with femininity.
Furthermore, I harness the power of language in my work to articulate the constraints I experienced in daily life. For example, the imperfections of the female form is used to critique societal beauty standards, while feminine clothing serves as a vehicle to express the complexities of my relationship with my mother.
As Simone de Beauvoir famously remarked, “A woman is shut up in a kitchen or a boudoir, and one is surprised her horizon is limited; her wings are cut, and then she is blamed for not knowing how to fly. Let a future be open to her and she will no longer be obliged to settle in the present”
(The Second Sex, 1949). My wish is for women to express themselves authentically, to be liberated from societal constraints and to be empowered to soar freely.
